Project proposal

Rationale (100 words)

This year I learnt how to work with a client and adopt a new way of approaching my work to prepare myself for a Graphic communication degree. I have learnt to keep focused on the needs of a client, it was difficult for me to get used to this new approach as it requires me to begin work with a clear aim and objective.  I enjoyed learning about typography and interesting ways to express multiple ideas in one image applying techniques such as juxtaposition and scale.

Practically I enjoyed developing my painting and printmaking skills learnt how to mix colours and layering applying my knowledge and understanding to express mood and meaning and my work.

Project Concept (200 words)

My project is on Phobias. It is a powerful personal theme as I have experience of the impact of phobia on daily living. I will be developing a fine art piece for the audience perhaps to empathize with and give opportunities for this subject to be a conversation.

Phobias which will form part of my research will be: Arachnophobia fear of spiders and bugs as it is one of the most common and will be relatable to the audience. Dysmorphophobia is the morphing and distorting of faces which is a clear visual communication tool.  I am also interested in representing a personal experience of living with someone who battles with OCD links to germaphobia (fear of germs) and Emetophobia (fear of vomiting)

During my project, I will be looking at artists and other sources linking to the visual symptoms created by fears, which could be described as ‘order and chaos’ such as the order seen in Maths and the chaos in distortion. I want to draw inspiration from Marc Quinn and Frances Bacon for their focus on eerie human figures.

The aim is for the audience to have the opportunity to consider the person behind the personification of the phobia. Using the figure may humanize the piece.

Evaluation (50 words)

I plan to thoroughly evaluate my 2D turned 3D Acrylic Painting on an A2 handmade canvas including in-depth techniques on colour theory using keywords such as: hues, tints, shades and highlights, explaining the usage of dilution in acrylic tones and layering. I’ve kept annotation on my PowerPoint to a minimum, only including captioning and reflective comments. My Harvard referencing is up to date as well as my time plan doc.
